About

So, there’s a guy sitting on a corner with a sign in his hand, protesting. And someone comes over and says, “Do you really think you sitting here with a sign is going to convince anyone to change their mind?” And the guy says, “Probably not. But I bet there are a few people who go by and see my sign and say, ‘I feel the same way’ and that is probably pretty important to them. That’s enough for me.”

And that is the concept behind the Allies podcast. We tell each other stories from our real lives not to convince others to come over to one side or another. Not even to create some great wellspring of understanding. We just want people to be heard. For someone to say, “OK. I get it. I never looked at it that way. I never realized how real this situation is. In many ways they are just like me. They want to raise their kids in a safe world. They want to live without fear. They want a kinder world.”

So many people pine for a past that never was. The fact is, the world was never ideal. If we were comfortable at a particular time, it doesn’t mean that others were not in pain elsewhere. And that is true right now. If you have an idyllic life, I am truly happy for you. I am glad you are getting by. And maybe in that happy life, there is room to hear some other people’s stories. They too are happy, content, hopeful, but they also have somethings that they think can get better and that, to me, makes their stories worth hearing.

I hope you enjoy these talks. They are not formal or fancy. They are kitchen table talks. But my sense is when we look back on our lives, some of the best talks we’ve ever had were at kitchen tables, on patios or decks, in plastic chairs with a cup of coffee, a beer or a glass of wine. With family. With friends. With Allies.
